Sustainable agriculture and carbon credits in Cambodia

infranomics

In the heart of Cambodia’s cultural hub, Siem Reap is blessed with many historical treasures and a vibrant tourism industry. As the region evolves there are new sustainable agriculture and infrastructure projects being developed in preparation for the future. This week I visited AG Agribusiness Asia (Cambodia) Co Ltd’s (AG) latest project in Siem Reap which is a beacon of innovation, blending modern development with sustainable solutions that benefit both the community and the environment.

AG Asia and ING Holdings Co., Ltd are collaborating on a state-of-the-art corn farm integrating Australian and other international standard agricultural technology and techniques to significantly improve corn yields compared to traditional farming methods. In the future it is envisaged the farm will also include cotton, soybeans, grains, and high-yield rice. It is a landmark initiative dedicated to achieving sustainable development through responsible planning and resource management.

Approx 1,000Hec commercial corn farm will produce high-quality corn for the ASEAN Region. The farm intends to use the corn by-products as feedstock for biochar production which will be a soil amendment, improving fertility, water retention and raising soil pH levels.

Through energy-efficient design and operations, AG Asia is targeting significant reductions in Scope 1, 2, and 3 carbon emissions. These reductions not only help Cambodia meet its climate targets but also demonstrate how sustainability and business growth can coexist.

AG Asia’s project is not just about agriculture but also about building a sustainable legacy for Siem Reap. By leveraging the latest green technology advancements,  developing local partnerships and prioritising communities and the environment, this project showcases how modern development can harmoniously coexist with cultural heritage and ecological preservation.
